Dry WElls

  • A dry-well is either a structure with holes in it  that is installed in the ground or a hole filled with gravel. The purpose of a dry-well is to collect water & disperse it into the ground.

  • Dry-wells are useful in situation where there is no where to drain water on or off the property or where it is necessary to retain water on the property.

  • How successful a dry-well performs is dependent on the percolation of water through the soil. While clay soils tend to hold water for long periods of time, sandy soils drain water rapidly.

Area or surface Drains

  • Surface or Area Drains are one the most commonly used drains. Area drains collect storm water into a drain pipe that dispenses the water to another location.

  • Area drains are usually made from plastic, steel or brass. Drains can be as small as 3" & as large as 24" in diameter & can be square or round. Area drains can be used in planters, lawns, parking lots, patios & anywhere where standing water is a problem.

  • French drains are common drainage systems, primarily used to prevent ground and surface water from penetrating or damaging building foundations.

  •  French drains are also used behind retaining walls to relieve ground water pressure.
